Abstract

This paper examines the geographical influences on agricultural practices in Solapur district, a semi-arid region in Maharashtra, and analyses the sustainability of its crop and livestock production systems. The study explores how geographical factors like low and erratic rainfall, black cotton soils, and the rain shadow location have shaped the district's farming landscape. It investigates the challenges posed by water scarcity, soil degradation, and climate variability, particularly in relation to the cultivation of water-intensive crops like sugarcane and the widespread practice of rainfed agriculture. Furthermore, the paper highlights the critical role of livestock, especially sheep and goats, in providing a resilient livelihood and their synergistic relationship with crop production. Through a review of existing literature and an analysis of current practices, the study identifies key sustainable strategies, including micro-irrigation, crop diversification, and integrated farming systems. The findings underscore the necessity of a holistic approach that leverages the geographical strengths of the region while mitigating its inherent weaknesses to ensure long-term food security and economic stability for the local population.
