Abstract

Family and social support are fundamental pillars of holistic mental health, functioning as powerful protective factors that foster resilience, improve coping mechanisms, and provide a critical safety net during times of crisis. The strength and quality of these relationships directly impact an individual's emotional, psychological, and even physical well-being. Fostering and maintaining strong family and social connections is not just a secondary benefit of a healthy life; it is a foundational component of holistic mental wellness. Social support is a broad term that focuses on either our perception that other people would be there for us if needed (perceived support) or the actual receipt of social resources from our relationships (received support). Define as such, social support has been related to significant mental health outcomes including depression, anxiety, and life satisfaction. Theoretical models and recent research are helping to identify how social support produces these mental health outcomes and its implications for intervention, policy, and personal adjustment.
