Role of Libraries as Contributing Agents for Social Transformation in India: An Overview

In India, libraries have historically played a key role in widening educational access, strengthening democratic participation, and supporting social upliftment. As the country undergoes rapid technological and socio-economic change, libraries are increasingly redefining their functions to address diverse community needs. This paper examines the contribution of Indian libraries to social transformation through literacy promotion, information access, digital inclusion, empowerment of marginalized communities, and cultural preservation. It synthesizes Indian scholarly perspectives, highlights strategies adopted by libraries to enhance their social impact, and analyzes the contextual challenges faced by library professionals. The study concludes with recommendations for strengthening the role of libraries as catalysts for future social change in India.
