##article.abstract##

The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has emerged as a transformative digital payment system fostering financial inclusion in rural India by overcoming long-standing geographical, economic, and institutional barriers to banking access. This study examines the extent to which UPI facilitates integration of rural populations into the formal financial system through affordable, real-time, and mobile-based transactions. Adopting a pragmatic research paradigm and a mixed-methods explanatory sequential design, the study combines quantitative survey data with qualitative interviews across select rural districts. Findings reveal moderate but steadily increasing UPI adoption, strongly influenced by education, smartphone ownership, and proximity to physical bank branches. UPI usage has significantly improved financial behavior, enhanced cash-flow management for small businesses, empowered women through direct control over finances, and strengthened transparency in government benefit transfers via Direct Benefit Transfers (DBTs). Despite these gains, challenges such as digital literacy gaps, connectivity issues, and security concerns persist. The study provides evidence-based policy recommendations to strengthen digital infrastructure, expand localized financial literacy initiatives, and enhance support mechanisms, positioning UPI as a scalable and sustainable model for inclusive economic development in rural India.
