Abstract

This paper examines how social reform movements in India have reshaped caste relations from the late nineteenth century to the present, arguing that reforms produced a complex reconfiguration rather than a simple dissolution of caste hierarchies. Combining historical-comparative analysis of archival documents and reform literature with recent ethnographic case studies and secondary scholarship, the study traces three intertwined processes: (1) ideological contestation reformers challenged caste-based exclusion through critique, new moral vocabularies and alternative social imaginaries; (2) structural change education, land reforms, urbanization and legislative measures (including affirmative action) created new routes for mobility and emergent status groups; and (3) political institutionalization subaltern and caste-based movements converted social claims into political representation, changing party formations, patronage networks, and policy priorities. The paper highlights continuities as well as ruptures: while formal barriers and ritual strictures weakened in many urban and institutional settings, caste persisted in reconstituted forms through localized social practices, economic inequalities, and symbolic assertions of identity. By situating reform movements within broader socio-economic transformations, the study shows that reform produced negotiated, uneven, and context-specific outcomes. The paper concludes with implications for scholars and policymakers: interventions promoting equality must address both material redistribution and cultural recognition, and future research should attend to micro-level processes that mediate macro-level reforms.
