Abstract

Agriculture continues to play a crucial role in the socio-economic development of rural India, serving as the primary source of livelihood for a large section of the population. In Maharashtra, particularly in Kolhapur district, agriculture has undergone significant transformation due to the introduction of modern technology, improved irrigation facilities, and government support programmes. The present study examines the process of agricultural transformation and its contribution to rural development in Ariya village of Kolhapur district. The study aims to analyse changes in agricultural practices, productivity, and socio-economic conditions of rural households during the period from 2019 to 2024. The research adopts a descriptive research design and is based on both primary and secondary data. Primary data were collected through household surveys, structured interviews with farmers, and field observations, while secondary data were obtained from government reports, research publications, and statistical records. The study focuses on key indicators such as cropping patterns, irrigation coverage, use of improved seeds and farm machinery, farm income, and participation in government agricultural schemes. The findings of the study reveal a noticeable improvement in agricultural productivity and rural development indicators in Ariya village during the study period. Increased irrigation coverage, adoption of modern agricultural inputs, and mechanisation have contributed to higher crop yields and improved farm income. The study also highlights positive changes in rural livelihoods, including diversification into allied activities such as dairy farming and wage employment. However, challenges such as water scarcity, rising input costs, fragmented landholdings, and climate variability continue to affect small and marginal farmers. The study concludes that agricultural transformation has played a significant role in promoting rural development in Ariya village. It emphasises the need for sustainable agricultural practices, improved irrigation management, and inclusive policy interventions to ensure balanced and long-term rural development. The findings of the study provide valuable insights for policymakers, planners, and researchers working in the field of agriculture and rural development.
