ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF BANANA CULTIVATION AND PRODUCTION IN INDIA: A GEOGRAPHICAL PERSPECTIVE

Bananas are scientifically identified as Musa paradisiaca, and the Musaceae is its original family. Around the world, bananas are the most cultivated crop. Bananas, which are rich in fibre and carbohydrates, are the staple food of those in poverty. The world's most significant production of bananas and cultivation area can be discovered in India. Although India has a wide variety of bananas, certain of them are in high demand outside the country. Bananas from India are exported to the Gulf, America, Russia, Europe, Australia, and East Asia. For India, bananas are a significant source of foreign exchange. Aside from this, the farmers' financial situation has improved because they were paid fairly. This crop thrives in South India's tropical environment. Aside from this, this crop produces a decent yield when water is planned properly, the right banana type is chosen, and organic fertilisers, other fertilisers, and pesticides are used appropriately. As a result, India's banana production and cultivation area are steadily growing. Very strong wind, heavy rainfall, lack of proper guidance, inappropriate government policy, market price of banana, fluctuations in international trade also affect banana production. In India, in the year 2017-18, total banana cultivation was done on an area of 884,000 hectares, out of which 3,080,800 tonnes of bananas were produced. At that time, the production per hectare was 34.85 tonnes. Whereas in the year 2023-24, the area under banana cultivation was 9,87,000 hectares while the banana production was 3,81,45,000 tonnes. Then the production per hectare was 38.64 tonnes. Compared to the year 2017-18, the production per hectare increased by 3.79 tonnes in the year 2023-24. That is, there has been an increase of about 10 percent in production per hectare during this period. Due to a number of factors, including a favourable climate, fair market prices with few exceptions, rising demand in the global market, farmers' growing interest in growing bananas, formula and planned guidance, and the selection of tissue culture plants, the production of banana plantations increased significantly during this time. In addition to this, the production per hectare increased.
