Artificial Intelligence and Digital Technologies in Indian Democracy

India, the largest democratic nation by population, is experiencing profound changes in its political and governance systems due to the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence and digital platforms. This paper systematically examines both the constructive possibilities and serious threats these technologies present to democratic processes. It highlights how AI supports wider citizen engagement, multilingual communication, and more efficient public services, while simultaneously creating dangers through synthetic media, information manipulation, and deepening digital exclusion. Drawing lessons from the 2024 national elections and 2025 state assembly polls, the paper reviews India's current policy approach-which favours inclusive innovation over strict regulation-and offers practical recommendations for safeguarding democratic integrity in the digital age.
