Sufism and the Caste System in Maharashtra: Impact on Social Behavior and Democratic Values in the 21st Century

Abstract

This paper examines the historical and contemporary relationship between Sufism and the caste system in Maharashtra, focusing on how Sufi ethical teachings, shrine-centered devotional cultures, and Bhakti–Sufi convergences have shaped social behavior and democratic values in the twenty-first century. While caste remains one of the most resilient structures of social stratification in India, Maharashtra’s religious landscape has also nurtured counter-traditions that challenge hierarchical exclusions through moral egalitarianism, shared sacred spaces, and vernacular devotional ethics. The paper argues that the social life of Sufi dargahs—marked by open access, ritual hospitality, and everyday intercommunity interaction—has produced what may be called “vernacular social democracy,” a lived culture of fraternity that does not erase caste but reconfigures social relations in ethically meaningful ways. It further analyzes the Bhakti–Sufi interface in Maharashtra, with specific attention to the Warkari tradition and Muslim Marathi saint-poets such as Sheikh Muhammad and Shah Muni, who participated in a broader anti-hierarchical devotional current. Finally, the paper interprets the Sufi concept of insān-e-kāmil (the “perfect human”) as a moral-psychological framework influencing contemporary ethics, empathy, and civic virtues, and it situates Sufi thought within a global context marked by intensifying religious polarization. The study concludes that Sufi-associated practices and imaginaries remain crucial resources for building democratic values—especially fraternity, pluralism, and ethical restraint—within Maharashtra’s contemporary public culture.
