Echoes of the Monastery: Historical Layers of Subaltern Participation and 21st-Century Social Transformation in Ladakh

Abstract

This paper explores the historical layers of subaltern participation in the formation and sustenance of Buddhist monasteries in Ladakh from the ninth to the seventeenth centuries and examines their continuing influence on social transformations in the twenty-first century. While much of the historiography of Ladakh has centred on royal patronage, elite monastic hierarchies and political control, this study highlights the agency of ordinary devotees, artisans, traders and villagers who materially and ritually contributed to the making of Ladakh’s sacred landscape. Using monastic chronicles, architectural remains and oral narratives, the paper reconstructs how monasteries emerged not merely as religious centres but as social institutions embedded within local networks of labour, exchange and faith. It further argues that the participatory traditions established in the medieval period - through festivals, pilgrimage circuits and collective acts of devotion - have shaped patterns of community solidarity and cultural continuity that persist into modern Ladakh. The paper concludes by reflecting on how monasteries continue to serve as spaces of negotiation between tradition and modernity, playing transformative roles in education, environmental activism and cultural identity in twenty-first-century Ladakh.
