Indian Agriculture and Sustainable Development: A Geographical Study

Abstract

Agriculture has long been the backbone of India’s economy, providing livelihood, food security, and raw materials for industry. However, the growing challenges of soil degradation, water scarcity, and climate change demand a shift towards sustainable agricultural practices. This paper presents a geographical perspective on India’s agricultural evolution from traditional to modern systems and emphasizes the importance of integrating environmental, social, and economic dimensions for sustainable development. It explores the history of Indian agriculture, the key features and types of farming, and the role of technology, biotechnology, and water management in ensuring long-term productivity. The study further examines issues such as land fragmentation, overuse of chemicals, and low farmer income, offering practical solutions like crop diversification, organic farming, and technological innovations.
