ROLE OF MODERN TECHNOLOGY IN AGRICULTURAL

Agriculture is the backbone of Maharashtra’s economy and supports a large proportion of its population. However, the sector faces challenges such as climate variability, water scarcity, fragmented landholdings, and rising production costs. In this context, modern technology has emerged as a powerful tool for enhancing agricultural productivity, sustainability, and farmers’ income. The present study examines the role of modern agricultural technologies in the development of agriculture in Maharashtra. The study is based on secondary data collected from government reports, research journals, and official publications. Technologies such as precision farming, drip and sprinkler irrigation, improved seed varieties, biotechnology, information and communication technology (ICT), artificial intelligence, drones, and solar-powered irrigation systems have been analysed. The findings reveal that modern technology has significantly improved crop productivity, resource-use efficiency, climate resilience, and market access in the state. However, issues like high initial investment, lack of technical knowledge, and uneven adoption across regions still persist. The study concludes that strengthening institutional support, farmer training, and digital infrastructure can further enhance the positive impact of modern technology on agricultural development in Maharashtra.
