The Green Revolution represents one of the most significant agricultural transformations in post-independence India. During the 1950s and early 1960s, India faced severe food shortages, low agricultural productivity, and frequent dependence on foreign food aid, particularly under the PL-480 programme. Rapid population growth further increased pressure on the country’s limited food resources. In this context, achieving self-sufficiency in food production became a national priority. To address this crisis, the Government of India, with the support of agricultural scientists, introduced a package of modern farming technologies that collectively came to be known as the Green Revolution.
