Agriculture tourism, or agro-tourism, has emerged as a promising avenue for rural development in India, blending farming activities with tourism to provide visitors an authentic countryside experience. Rooted in India’s agrarian traditions, the sector offers opportunities for additional income generation, cultural preservation, and sustainable rural livelihoods. This paper explores the historical evolution, current trends, and economic, cultural, and environmental significance of agriculture tourism in India. It highlights its potential in job creation, community empowerment, and biodiversity conservation while identifying challenges such as infrastructural deficiencies, inadequate promotion, and seasonality. The role of government initiatives, case studies from states like Maharashtra, Kerala, and Himachal Pradesh, and comparative insights from global practices demonstrate the sector’s scope for structured development. The COVID-19 pandemic posed significant setbacks, but with innovative digital marketing, community participation, and policy support, agriculture tourism can evolve into a sustainable industry that strengthens the rural economy and enhances cultural exchange. The study concludes that with adequate planning, infrastructure, and promotion, India can leverage its agricultural and cultural wealth to position agriculture tourism as a vital driver of inclusive growth.
