Evolution of Skill Development Policies in India: Challenges and Opportunities

The Skill development has emerged as a crucial policy priority in India due to rapid economic transformation, technological advancement, and demographic changes. India possesses a significant demographic dividend, but its effective utilization depends largely on the skill level of the workforce. Over the years, the Government of India has introduced several skill development policies and programs to enhance employability and productivity. This research paper examines the evolution of skill development policies in India, highlights key initiatives, analyses major challenges, and explores emerging opportunities. The study is based on secondary data collected from government reports, policy documents, and scholarly literature. The paper concludes that while India has made significant progress in institutionalizing skill development, issues related to quality, inclusiveness, and industry relevance continue to persist.
